Objectives

the PhD Course in Geology has the main objective of strengthening and enlarging the levels of research skills in different areas of the geological knowledge and/or interplay domains with other areas of knowledge.
This PhD Course in Geology rests upon a strategy of permanent interaction and sharing of (human and material) resources, skills and knowledge among the Department of Geology and the R&D unit funded by FCT (IDL - Instituto Dom Luiz, Associate Laboratory). This interaction translates in teaching, research, scientific, technological and professional development and achievements, and also in direct intervention beyond the University campus, besides the accessibility to specialized laboratory facilities (e.g. stable-isotopes mass spectrometry, scanning electron microprobe).
The first of the three years PhD (3rd cycle) Course corresponds to an Advanced Training Course (CFA - 60 ECTS); once completed, the student shall proceed to the registration of both the title and work plan of an individual thesis, which is valid through a 5 year period. During the two last years of the PhD program, students are required to develop research activities according to their thesis objectives and plan, and two annual Doctoral Seminars. 96 of the 180 total ECTS credits of this program, entirely translated by tutorial (OT) workload relate to the preparation of the thesis in the scientific area of Geology in any of the specialties listed below, in close relation with the Doctoral Seminars (24 ECTS), distributed by the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th semesters. The ECTS credits required, whether mandatory or optional, may be entirely or partly acquired by crediting equivalent level training obtained in similar institutions, in Portugal or abroad.
