First offered in 2022/2023, the Doctorate in Modern Literatures, Arts and Cultures unifies the postgraduate study of foreign modern literatures, arts and cultures.
In an interdisciplinary perspective, it crosses the study of literatures, arts and cultures, both from dominant and less studied areas, which are part of the fundamental matrix of a School of Humanity such as the Faculty of arts and humanities.
With a flexible structure and a unique study plan in Portugal, the course promotes critical knowledge of relevant historical and theoretical aspects of the field of Modern Literatures, covering different geographies, genres, identities and times; aims to provide students with the theoretical-methodological tools necessary to develop research in the various domains of Modern Literature; deepens skills of interpretation and critical reflection on works of art; and prepares the production of autonomous critical thinking and discourse.
It provides for the construction of an individualized path, by establishing that the specialty selected by the students, for the orientation seminar and the doctoral thesis, defines the specialty.
The Doctorate in Modern Literature, Arts and Cultures includes nine specialties in a single postgraduate offer.

Objectives

This PhD is intended as a continuation of the eponymous 2nd cycle/master's course. Like this one, it aims to unify the postgraduate study of modern foreign literatures, arts, and cultures that are spread across several doctoral programs and, in some cases, have not been offered for a long time.
