The Integrated Master in Medicine lasts 6 years (12 semesters), confers the Degree in Basic Studies of Medicine (1st cycle) – Conferred upon completion of the first three years of the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine (180 ECTS) and Master's Degree in Medicine (2nd cycle) – Conferred upon completion of the Master's Degree Integrated in Medicine (360 ECTS and approval in the Final Work of the Integrated Master in Medicine).
It stands on a teaching model based on major areas that integrate knowledge, and on student-centred programmes, with a strong component of early exposure and practical connection to Clinical Medicine. It promotes students' individual commitment and creativity, and offers a wide range of optional activities with special emphasis on carrying out scientific research projects by students and clinical activities in partner health institutions.
To train doctors so that they acquire solid scientific training, practical skills and professional attitude through a teaching programme with the following objectives:
To provide education and training in Biosciences that are key to understanding the mechanisms of life and its evolution;
To foster learning the scientific foundations and development of skills in doctor-patient communication, and in the perception of the personal, family and social dimension of the disease and its implications;
Integration of fundamental knowledge to solve clinical problems and reinforce the scientific aspect of Clinical Medicine;
Acquisition of clinical skills and training in their practice;
Understanding the fundamentals of contemporary medicine;
Development of self-learning and individual accountability;
Knowledge of the fundamentals of Bioethics and Ethics in Medicine.
These objectives are enhanced by FMUL’s participation in the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre, within the framework of an integrated organization model of teaching, research and health service provision.
