The need for specialized training in the field of Educational Psychology is particularly urgent in the current Portuguese context, in view of the demand and commitment to improve educational contexts and students’ academic preparation; to prepare different professionals to face the new challenges posed to educational contexts in a changing society; to enhance the qualification of the Portuguese population, by reducing the levels of failure and dropping out of school and encouraging the pursuit of studies in a perspective of lifelong learning; and to approach new responsibilities that involve adopting measures related to promoting health global of the population, through health education in an educational environment.
The inter-university PhD program in Psychology, specializing in Educational Psychology, is a joint initiative of the Faculties of Psychology of the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon and aims to integrate theoretical, methodological and technical knowledge in three research areas (Learning in an Educational Context, Vocational and Personal Development and Health Promotion and Well-Being) and develop research skills that enable the design, adaptation, implementation and evaluation of studies in the field of Educational Psychology. The collaboration of foreign professors in this specialized training is also foreseen, opening the possibility of the PhD to have the European PhD title associated with it.
The program of studies leading to the doctoral degree comprises two phases:
1) Doctoral Course, lasting two semesters, corresponding to 60 ECTS that takes place between October and July.
2) Preparation of the Doctoral Thesis, its discussion and approval, meaning a student workload corresponding to 120 ECTS.
This study cycle is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES)
The program seeks to develop innovation processes with educational psychologists as well as other professionals in this area of knowledge, through:
- deepening and updating theoretical, methodological and technical knowledge specialized in psychology in the areas of learning in educational context, vocational and personal development and the promotion of health and well-being;
- the development of research skills to design, adapt, conduct and evaluate studies in the field of Educational Psychology;
- the creation and strengthening of national and international research teams with potential international student exchange and researchers to develop the internationalization of national research;
- the promotion of scientific and technological progress of the institutions involved, consolidating the projects underway in their Research Centers and developing new research, which is appropriate to the needs of the community itself.
The research projects may be in the following areas:
i) Learning in Educational Contexts (self-regulation, co-regulation and socially shared regulation of learning, behavior and emotions, and approaches to learning; conceptions of learning and problem solving; psychological assessment and special needs; creative learning; school conflict (bullying and cyberbullying) and moral agency; ii) Vocational and Personal Development (psychosocial transitions and quality of life; vocational development and life project construction; psychological assessment in career guidance and counseling; new perspectives for vocational psychology); iii) Health Promotion and Well-Being (health promoting interventions [healthy eating, physical activity, sexuality, among others] and well-being; promotion of socio-emotional skills; design and adaptation of intervention programs in domains relevant to health and well-being; self-regulation to promote healthy lifestyles; experiences, processes and coping and savoring responses).
