The Doctorate in Education combines in-depth and up-to-date knowledge in the scientific area with rigorous theoretical and methodological training in order to promote the development of original research with a transformative impact. Advanced training contributes to the resolution of critical problems in the areas of research and innovation in various contexts of educational practice.

The development of research is carried out in close articulation with the research programs and projects under way at the research center of the Institute of Education – the Research and Development Unit in Education and Training (UIDEF) – and in connection with other universities and national and foreign research centers.

The Doctorate in Education is recognized, in its different areas of expertise, for the purposes of counting time for progression in the teaching career (in accordance with Ordinance No. 344/2008, of April 30). This information does not dispense with reading the legislation in force and we suggest consulting the DGAE website.

The cycle of studies leading to the degree of Doctor of Education comprises two phases:

Doctoral course, which constitutes a propaedeutic and probationary period, with a maximum duration of two semesters (corresponding to 60 ECTS), and which takes the form of a research project. At the end of the course, the project is defended in a public act and its approval is a condition for the continuity of the study cycle;
Elaboration, discussion and approval of the doctoral thesis, original and specially made for this purpose.
