ISCSP is the oldest School in Portugal in the scientific area of Political Science. The doctoral program in the area was created in 1980, seeking to respond to the emergence of the study of these subjects in the country, in the post-April Revolution period. Over these more than 40 years, the Doutoramento Degree program has tried to keep up with the evolution and the scientific and pedagogical advances in the discipline at a national and international level.

The current curricular plan includes a solid basic training at an advanced level in the field of Political Science in the methodological, theoretical and empirical domains, central axes for the production of original and innovative scientific knowledge. Based on an interdisciplinary perspective, the Doutoramento Degree program also ensures students thematic diversity and alternative paths in the fields of (1) political theory and analysis, and (2) political and strategic studies (through optional courses).

Students acquire a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills, which enable them to have a global perspective of the scope and importance of the study of Political Science in a changing world, as well as to design original, innovative and impactful research
