The Department of Mathematics at IST offers programs covering a broad range of topics leading to a Doctoral Degree. Candidates are admitted to either the PhD Program in Mathematics, the PhD Program in Statistics and Stochastic Processes, or the PhD Program in Information Security.
The PhD Program in Mathematics offers both in depth and in breadth preparation in Mathematics. The program includes courses in algebra and topology, numerical analysis and applied analysis, real analysis and functional analysis, differential equations and dynamical systems, mathematical physics, geometry, logic and computation, probability and statistics. Students interested in Applied Mathematics can study applications in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Finance and Information Systems, and have access to courses in scientific subjects related to their research offered by other Departments at IST. PhD students are encouraged to take advantage of the many research seminars and colloquia offered by the Mathematics Department.
The PhD Program in Mathematics consists of two components: an obligatory coursework component, and a research component leading to the completion of a PhD thesis under the direction of a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics. Classes with foreign students enrolled are taught in English.
The aim of the PhD Program in Mathematics is to prepare students to become research scholars in an academic or industrial environment.
