Materials Engineering studies materials, from their atomic structure and properties to their large-scale production and recycling. A materials engineer analyzes and develops materials with a view to their application in the metallurgical and metalworking industry, polymers, ceramics, and glass industries. These professionals also work in certification and quality assurance and in the development of advanced biomaterials and materials, also contributing to electronics.

Objectives

Basic knowledge of Materials Science must be supported by a solid background in fundamental sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry), engineering sciences (thermodynamics, transport phenomena, geometric
design and modeling, computation) and management. LEMat´s syllabus is characterized by the introduction from the 1st year of curricular units (UCs) in Materials Science and Engineering Materials. The first of them aims to
introduce the student to the function, role and importance of the materials engineer in industry and society. This is followed by a set of UCs that cover the fundamentals of Materials Science associated with the different types of
materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites). Also included are UCs that aim to provide specific competences on materials characterization (chemical composition, structure, properties). The curricular plan
provides the student with a solid knowledge of these themes, both theoretically and experimentally.

Career prospects
Materials Engineering aims to obtain products from materials, including design and project. Materials Science and Engineering study natural and man-made materials, from their synthesis/processing, properties, characterization and development for a wide diversity of applications. Materials Science aims at understanding the relationships between chemical composition, structure, properties and processing of materials, while Materials Engineering focuses on the application of this knowledge to product development. The main purpose of the Degree (1st Cycle) in Materials Engineering (LEMat) is the basic knowledge of Materials Science. It is intended to train graduates with a broad spectrum of knowledge profile, allowing an easy entry into the Master (2nd Cycle) in Materials Engineering or related courses, in this country or abroad, and to monitor the evolution of knowledge and technologies throughout their professional life.
