Electronic Engineering focuses on the study of the electronic component of the different devices that are part of our everyday life, that is, their circuits and small electrical components. The role of electronic engineers is to design, develop, produce and apply electronic modules for different areas such as telecommunications, robotics or even medicine, acting in interdisciplinary teams at different stages of the development of a product.

Objectives

The objective of the Degree in Engineering Sciences - Electronics Engineering is to give students a wide variety of knowledge and creative skills, focused on cutting-edge technologies such as electronic components, equipment and systems in all its aspects and applications (telecommunications, control, information technologies, energy, etc.). Graduates should be able to integrate teams and meet the most diversified demands, ranging from engineering services, marketing and manufacturing of electronic products (see course web page at http://ee.tagus.ist.utl.pt ).

Career prospects
Strong knowledge in Electronics will allow students to easily work in different industries such as the automotive, telecommunications, processing industry, etc, which normally require students to be able to: • Prepare, manufacture, test and keep working electronic equipment and systems, which make use of new technologies; • Develop studies and architectures and project small systems with different types of technology (digital, analogue and mixed), used in high-performance computational equipment and in modern telecommunications systems; • Develop some low and high-level software required by this type of equipment; • Be familiar with the technologies and manufacture processes more appropriate to the materials and components involved in the new systems; • Interact with professionals from other areas aiming at the industrial production in the context of different industrial companies, which may require interdisciplinary teams; • Draft technical documentation and share it with other work team members and customers, suppliers and the society, in one or several languages and ways of expression; • Adapt themselves to the fast technological changes and the corresponding alterations of the type of activity throughout their professional life; • Have strong basic principles, which allow them to pursue studies in other areas of engineering or deepen their knowledge in the area of electronics and its applications. Typical employers are the automotive industry, telecommunications, electronics and microelectronics, industrial automation, energy, maintenance services and systems management, as well as the area of industrial management. The excellence of basic education opens useful perspectives for more in-depth training in the area of electronics or related areas, in Portugal or abroad.
