Sumário

The aims of this course are to provide fundamental knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of Human-Animal Studies. In attending and completing this course, students will be able to: identify the main analytical guidelines in Human-Animal Studies, their main theoretical and methodological paradigms, theories and concepts; understand the main multi-species methodologies, and know how to discuss their advantages and limitations; know how to identify and discuss the main areas in which human/non-human relationships are formed, with impact on all species (health, environment, politics, legal, ethics, private life, media and symbolic representations, art, literature, among others), in different contexts (rural/urban, wild/domestic; family and personal life; food consumption; other types of consumption; entertainment and leisure; among others); know how to enable a proper critical understanding of the situation of non-human animals, their living conditions and well-being, locating them in the context of power relations with other species, both human and non-human; to reflect creatively on how to apply this knowledge in work settings, in particular in contact with non-human species.
