Cinema and social sciences
Cinema and social sciences
- 2022/2023
- 1º Semestre
Are you an anthropologist who captures or would like to capture sound and image in your fieldwork? Are you a historian who uses archives with moving images? Are you a sociologist who conducts interviews and would like to publicise them using accessible and dynamic language? Do you know the rules and conventions of cinema and audio-visual language? Did you know that it is organized in paragraphs and sentences, just like writing?
This course, which addresses the relationship between Cinema and the Social Sciences, is organized along three main lines: “Reading/Seeing Cinema”, “Cinema and Archive”, and “Doing Cinema”. The classes will include presentations by guest speakers on artistic creation, ways of accessing and working with archives, and academic research projects in the social sciences. Films made by researchers will be discussed in order to analyse practical examples of the value of film and the audio-visual in disciplines such as History, Anthropology, Geography and Sociology, together with introductory practice in making short films.
