This course explores ethical and legal issues in museums with a focus on provenance, research and display of scientific colonial collections

The aim of the course is to introduce participants to a body of theoretical and practical knowledge about ethics and legislation in museums, with a focus on scientific collections. The course explores themes such as: ethical and legal constraints that shape museological practices; main guiding documents, namely ‘Code of Ethics for Museums’ and Code of Ethics for Natural History Museums’ from ICOM; relations between ethics, legislation (national and international) and practices (collection management, educational programs and exhibitions); challenges and dilemmas, with a particular focus on issues related to the study and exhibition of colonial collections.
Includes critical analysis of case studies.
