A team of researchers from the IST Técnico Lisboa, one of the Schools of Universidade de Lisboa, led by Paulo Peças and Marco Leite from the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM), developed a prototype for protective visors for the professionals on the front line in the fight against COVID-19.

After achieving the validation of the prototype, the team has already  started printing them and now launches the challenge to anyone who owns 3D printers to join this project, which puts technology at the service of medicine, at a time where it is needed the most.

The model produced by Técnico has an important specificity at a moment of crisis and shortage of materials, such as the one we are currently experiencing. “Our visor allows the easy placement / replacement of common acetate that serves as a protective barrier, so that it can easily be exchanged in the hospital when necessary, only by using a new acetate perforated with a common hole. It is easily reusable and that is what distinguishes it”, highlights Professor Paulo Peças.

The team has managed to deliver a batch of visors to Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca Hospital, in Amadora, as well as Santa Maria Hospital. “These deliveries are being made according to the requests we receive. I would like if we managed to deliver more and more”, states Professor Paulo Peças. For this to happen it is enough that those who have 3D printers are willing to collaborate with this solidarity movement.

Pede-se à comunidade existente nas proximidades do Instituto Superior Técnico que tenha acesso a Impressoras 3D FDM a colaboração no sentido de aumentar a produção diária. A equipa aceita também doações de folhas de acetato.

It is asked to the existing community nearby IST Técnico Lisboa who have access to FDM 3D printers the collaboration in order to increase daily production. The team also accepts donations of acetate sheets.

Manufacturing Recommendations – FDM:
STL Download
Procedure for the assembly of visors
Procedure for cutting acetates
STL Pin
Material: PLA or PetG
Layer thickness 0.2
20% filling
Number of contours: 2
Number of top and bottom layers:2
No support required
Do not put BRIM
Priting time is about 3 hours.

These parameters will have to be adapted according to the available printer.

Delivery instructions:
The deliver in 10 units batches should be done in IST Técnico Lisboa facilities, Central Pavilion, room C01, every weekday, between 11 a.m and 12 p.m and 16:30 p.m and 17:30 p.m.
